Laura Marling (GB)

About

Also known as: Laura Beatrice Marling

Laura Marling has spent over fifteen years quietly proving herself one of the finest songwriters Britain has produced in a long time. Her folk and folk rock sound sits somewhere between intimate confessional and literary meditation, with songwriting that circles themes of womanhood, desire, loss, and psychoanalysis in ways that feel genuinely searching rather than decorative. Eight solo albums in, starting with the Mercury Prize nominated debut Alas, I Cannot Swim in 2008 and running through to Patterns in Repeat in 2024, her catalogue holds up with rare consistency. She cut her teeth early in the London nu folk scene, briefly playing with Noah and the Whale and collaborating with the likes of Mystery Jets and early Mumford and Sons members before her own career took off. Albums like Once I Was an Eagle and Song for Our Daughter drew Mercury Prize nominations and Grammy nods respectively, and her sixth record Semper Femina was also Grammy nominated. Critical respect has followed her throughout, but what keeps listeners coming back is the writing itself, plainspoken and precise one moment, emotionally slippery the next.
