About
Winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year at just fifteen set Laura van der Heijden on a trajectory that few classical musicians reach so early. The British cellist took the 2012 final with a performance of Walton's Cello Concerto, playing on a 1911 Farotti instrument borrowed from her teacher. Since then she has moved well beyond competition circuit status: her debut album 1948 picked up the Edison Klassiek Award in 2018, and BBC Music Magazine named her Newcomer of the Year in 2019. Her 2022 album Pohádka: Tales From Prague To Budapest, recorded with pianist Jâms Coleman for the Chandos label, showed a more intimate and exploratory side. More recently she gave the world premiere of Cheryl Frances Hoad's cello concerto Earth, Sea, Air with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and brought the piece to the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in 2024. She currently plays a late 17th century Francesco Rugeri cello from Cremona.
