Lauv built his name on a sound that sits right at the crossroads of indie pop, R&B and electronic production, and the 2017 single "I Like Me Better" is the track that put him on the map. It landed on his 2018 compilation I Met You When I Was 18 (The Playlist) and helped set up his debut album How I'm Feeling, which dropped in March 2020 and debuted at number 16 on the US Billboard 200. Behind the scenes he has also had a hand in other artists' hits, co writing and co producing "No Promises" for Cheat Codes and Demi Lovato, which reached number 7 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart, as well as writing "Boys" for Charli XCX. The name Lauv is Latvian for lion, a nod to his mother's heritage that also doubles as a play on his first name Ari, which means lion in Hebrew. His sound took shape with 2015 debut EP Lost in the Light, anchored by "The Other", a stripped down electronic pop song blending R&B and indie pop with jazz guitar that went viral on SoundCloud and peaked at number three on Hype Machine. He has since collaborated with Troye Sivan on "i'm so tired..." and teamed up with LANY on "Mean It".
