About
Also known as: LCD sound system
LCD Soundsystem built their reputation on a sound that blurs the line between the dance floor and the art rock record collection, rooted in Brooklyn and driven by James Murphy's obsessive ear for rhythm and texture. Their first single, "Losing My Edge", set the tone in 2002, an eight minute electronic provocation that became an underground classic before most people had heard the name. From there the band moved through a string of sharp, restless albums, with Sound of Silver in 2007 widely regarded as a high water mark, and This Is Happening in 2010 cracking the US top ten. They made a show of calling it quits with a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden in 2011, immortalised in the documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits, but the hiatus did not stick. The reunion produced American Dream in 2017, their first number one album in the US, and the single "Tonite" won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording. Co founded by Murphy under the DFA Records label, the band has always operated with a stubborn independence that makes their commercial breakthroughs feel genuinely earned.
