About
Founded in 1987 by conductor Hervé Niquet, Le Concert Spirituel has made it their mission to drag forgotten masterpieces of the French baroque repertoire back into the light. Named after the first private concert society in France, the ensemble performs on period instruments and has a particular obsession with music from the court of Versailles, championing composers like Lully, Charpentier, Campra and Boismortier. Their recordings have delivered genuine discoveries, including world premiere recordings of Destouches's Callirhoé and Marais's Sémélé, the latter winning Opera Recording of the Year at the Echo Klassik Awards in 2009. Beyond French repertoire, the ensemble has tackled Purcell's King Arthur, Handel's Messiah and even a jaw dropping Proms performance of Handel's Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks using 18 oboes, 9 trumpets and 9 trombones. They've collected Grammy nominations, German Record Critics Awards and a stack of French press prizes along the way, recording now exclusively for Alpha Classics.
