Founded in 1998 by lutenist and theorbist Vincent Dumestre, Le Poème Harmonique has carved out a distinctive place in early music by going deep into the sound world of the late Renaissance and early Baroque. The French ensemble plays rare instruments like the theorbo, lirone, tiorbino and arpa tripla, bringing an unusually poetic texture to 17th century French and Italian madrigals and court music. Their close relationship with the Alpha record label helped establish it as a serious force in classical recording, including both the first and hundredth releases in Alpha's flagship series. Their repertoire spans composers who once filled the halls of Versailles, Lalande, Lully, Couperin and Charpentier, alongside Italian Baroque from Monteverdi and Pergolesi and English consort music from Dowland and Gibbons. Le Poème Harmonique also collaborates with theatre directors and works with the Centre de Musique Baroque at Versailles to train singers, so the ensemble is as much about keeping a tradition alive as it is about performing it.
