About
Philippe Jaroussky is a French countertenor who sings entirely in falsetto, despite having a natural baritone speaking voice. That contrast sits at the heart of what makes him so striking: a man producing sounds of unearthly clarity and height, all by choice. He specialises in baroque and early music, cofounded the ensemble Artaserse in 2002, and has performed regularly with both Ensemble Matheus under Jean Christophe Spinosi and L'Arpeggiata under Christina Pluhar. He also recorded the album Duetti with countertenor Max Emanuel Cenčić. His reputation in France grew quickly. La Terrasse described him as having "the tone of an angel and the virtuosity of the devil", and multiple Victoires de la musique classique wins back that up. He picked up Echo Klassik awards for Best Singer of the Year in 2008 and 2016, and in 2020 received the Victoire d'honneur. He also founded the Académie musicale Philippe Jaroussky, an education programme launched in 2017 alongside the opening of La Seine Musicale in Paris.
