About
Magdalena Kožená is a Czech mezzo soprano whose voice spans an impressive range of repertoire, from Bach and Handel to Dvořák, Debussy and Mahler. Her career took off when Deutsche Grammophon signed her after hearing her debut Bach arias recording, and she has since built a substantial discography on that label, including Handel cantatas, Vivaldi opera arias with the Venice Baroque Orchestra, and a celebrated disc of Bach family cantatas titled Lamento with Musica Antiqua Köln. She won the Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2004 and has performed at virtually every major opera house and festival worth mentioning, Glyndebourne, Salzburg, the Met, Aix en Provence and beyond. On stage she is particularly associated with trouser roles in Mozart, Cherubino, Dorabella, Idamante and Zerlina among them, though she has also tackled Monteverdi, Gluck and Debussy with equal conviction. Her album for Pentatone features her husband Simon Rattle on piano, a genuinely warm collection of Dvořák, Janáček, Strauss and Chausson that feels more like a living room recital than a formal recording session.
