About

Also known as: Andrea Scholl

Few voices in classical music carry the weight of history quite like Andreas Scholl's. The German countertenor has built his career on music written for 18th century alto castrati, most notably the roles composed for Senesino, Handel's go to voice. His 1998 Glyndebourne debut as Bertarido in Handel's Rodelinda opposite Anna Caterina Antonacci was a landmark moment, with the Sunday Times reporting he stopped the show, and he later reprised the role at the Metropolitan Opera. Scholl records primarily for Harmonia Mundi and Decca, and his discs sit among Harmonia Mundi's best sellers. He has collaborated with leading Baroque conductors including William Christie and Philippe Herreweghe, the latter a connection that goes back to a 1991 St John Passion in Antwerp. Beyond performing, Scholl composes for theatre and ballet, works from his own professional studio, and since 2019 has held a professorship at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg.
