Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński has a genuinely unusual calling card: he is both a serious baroque opera singer and a trained breakdancer, and he has made those two worlds collide on stage more than once. Born in Warsaw, he has sung at the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne, and the Frankfurt Opera, building his reputation largely through Handel and Vivaldi repertoire. His debut solo album Anima Sacra, released on the Erato label in 2018 with Il Pomo d'Oro under Maxim Emelyanychev, featured what are believed to be world premiere recordings of eight baroque arias from the Neapolitan School. A second album, Facce d'amore, dug deeper into the many faces of love across operas by Cavalli, Handel, Scarlatti and others, earning praise for his dramatic instincts and stylish ornamentation. His voice has been described as sweet toned, and critics have noted the touching simplicity he brings to roles like Gluck's Orfeo. A Grammy nomination followed for his work on a recording of Handel's Agrippina, confirming that his mix of physicality and vocal finesse is something quite distinct in the classical world.
