Few conductors have shaped the way we hear Bach quite like Philippe Herreweghe. The Ghent born conductor founded Collegium Vocale Gent back in 1970, and it was that ensemble's fresh, rhetorically sensitive approach to Baroque music that caught the ear of Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt, who brought Herreweghe in on their landmark recordings of the complete Bach cantatas. He went on to found La Chapelle Royale in Paris in 1977, focused on French Baroque repertoire, and later the Orchestre des Champs Élysées, dedicated to performing Classical and Romantic works on period instruments. He has built a discography of over 100 recordings across labels including Harmonia Mundi, Virgin Classics and his own imprint PHI, launched in 2010. Highlights range from Bach's Mass in B Minor and St Matthew Passion to Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Bruckner's Fifth Symphony. Since 1997 he has served as principal conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, and scholars count him among the founding figures of the historically informed performance movement.
