About
Also known as: Collegium Vocale, Collegium Vocale Ghent
Founded in Ghent in 1970 on conductor Philippe Herreweghe's initiative, Collegium Vocale Gent was among the first vocal ensembles to seriously engage with baroque performance practice, and that early commitment to a text driven, rhetorical approach gave them a transparency of sound that set them apart. J. S. Bach's vocal works became their signature territory, performed with a lean ensemble where singers handle both choral and solo parts. Over time the repertoire has stretched well into Romantic and contemporary oratorio, with a symphonic choir that draws experienced voices alongside emerging talent from across Europe. With over 80 recordings on labels including Harmonia Mundi and Virgin Classics, including twelve volumes of Bach cantatas in the 1990s, their catalogue speaks for itself. Since 2010 Herreweghe has released new recordings on his own label phi, covering everything from Bach motets and the Mass in B minor to Mahler, Beethoven, Dvořák and Gesualdo. The ensemble has also collaborated with top orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw and the Budapest Festival Orchestra, working alongside conductors like Nikolaus Harnoncourt, René Jacobs and Yannick Nézet Séguin.
