About

Also known as: Antonius Gerhardus Michael Koopman, トン・コープマン

Ton Koopman is the kind of musician who draws a hard line in the sand: he has famously said he stops at Mozart's death in 1791, keeping his focus almost entirely on Baroque repertoire. As founder and director of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, the Dutch conductor, organist and harpsichordist has spent decades championing historically informed performance, using period instruments and authentic temperaments to bring composers like Bach and Buxtehude to life. His most monumental undertaking was recording the complete Bach cantatas, all 212 of them spread across 67 CDs, a project he finished in 2005 under his own label Antoine Marchand, which is simply a French translation of his name. He followed that with an equally ambitious complete works project for Buxtehude, wrapping that up in 2014. His discography also takes in Sweelinck, Handel, Vivaldi and Mozart, and he has been a professor at both the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the University of Leiden.
