Les Fatals Picards built their reputation on sharp, comedy laced rock that skewers everything from goth kids obsessing over The Cure to the hollow do gooderism of charity supergroups. The Paris based band has been at it since 1996, piling up songs that mix punk energy with chanson sensibility and lyrics that veer between slapstick and genuinely pointed left wing satire. Tracks like Sauvons Vivendi, a Band Aid parody pleading for sympathy toward a massive industrial conglomerate, show exactly the kind of deadpan absurdism they do best. Most people outside France first encountered them at Eurovision 2007 in Helsinki, where they performed the bilingual French and English song L'Amour à la française and finished 22nd out of 24 finalists. That result barely matters: the performance perfectly captured their tongue in cheek approach, and the band has kept releasing music well into the 2010s, with tracks like Dans un Ciel de Premier Mai appearing as recently as 2019.
