About

The Latvian Radio Choir is one of the rare ensembles trusted to perform Arvo Pärt's Kanon Pokajanen in its complete, uncut form. That is no small thing: the work runs to about two hours of uninterrupted choral music, drawing on the penitential canon of the Russian Orthodox Church. Pärt composed it as a deeply personal expression of contrition, originally written to mark the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral, built from nine odes in his characteristically serene and spare style. The choir brings the whole piece to life in a single sitting, which is a genuinely rare concert experience. Pärt himself described returning to the source texts slowly and devotedly, searching for their meaning, and that patience is written into every bar of the score.
