About
Also known as: Levellers Mutineers, The Levellers
Few bands carried the spirit of the early 90s British festival scene quite like the Levellers. The Brighton folk punk outfit built their reputation on a sound that mashed fiddle and mandolin into anarcho punk energy, drawing crowds who actually believed in the songs. Their 1991 album Levelling the Land set the tone, and by 1994 they were headlining Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage to a staggering 300,000 people, reportedly the largest crowd in the festival's history at that point. Their mid 90s run was relentless. Zeitgeist hit number one in its second week on the UK charts, and their Top of the Pops appearance for "Just the One" saw them in tuxedos, joined by Joe Strummer on honky tonk piano. They funded their own recording studio in a reclaimed Brighton factory called Metway, keeping creative control firmly in house. The Levellers have kept recording and touring ever since, with a catalogue that now stretches across more than a dozen albums.
