Liars have spent over two decades refusing to make the same record twice. Formed in Brooklyn in 2000 by Australian singer Angus Andrew and guitarist Aaron Hemphill, the band started out in the New York dance punk scene, even opening for Sonic Youth, before ditching that sound entirely and lurching toward noise rock, witchcraft concept albums, and eventually electronic experimentation. Their influences range from OMD and The Cure to PJ Harvey and Underworld, and those unlikely combinations go a long way toward explaining why no two Liars records feel like they come from the same band. Over ten studio albums on Mute Records, they have recorded in isolated LA cabins, collaborated with Jon Brion associate Tom Biller, and had Portishead personally invite them to perform at ATP's I'll Be Your Mirror festival. Their 2017 album TFCF marked a turning point, with founding member Aaron Hemphill departing after nearly two decades and Angus Andrew steering the project in a more intimate, autobiographical direction. Most recently, Liars released The Apple Drop in 2021, adding another chapter to one of the most restless catalogs in experimental rock.
