Few rappers have done more to shape the sound of Chicago drill than Lil Durk, who took the gritty subgenre and pushed it toward something far more melodic and commercially massive. Starting out with the Signed to the Streets mixtape series in 2013 and 2014, he built enough buzz to land a deal with Def Jam Recordings, releasing his debut album Remember My Name in 2015. After parting ways with the label, he signed with Alamo Records and his trajectory only accelerated. By 2020 he was placing multiple songs on the Billboard Hot 100, and his guest spot on Drake's "Laugh Now Cry Later" peaked at number two. His album The Voice hit number two on the Billboard 200, then The Voice of the Heroes with Lil Baby and his solo album 7220 both debuted at number one. His single "All My Life" featuring J. Cole peaked at number two on the Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance. He also founded the Chicago collective and label Only the Family, which included the late King Von.
