Liniker's voice gets compared to Tim Maia, which tells you something right away: powerful, low pitched, a little raspy, with a falsetto that she deploys whenever the moment calls for it. The Brazilian singer songwriter built her name fronting Liniker e os Caramelows, a band she formed in 2015 with friends and described their sound as new Brazilian Black music or "funzy", a fusion that pulls from soul, R&B, Caribbean and African music, samba and beyond. Their single Zero went viral fast, clocking 1.5 million YouTube views in a week, and the 2019 album Goela Abaixo earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Portuguese Language Rock or Alternative Album. After the band split, Liniker stepped fully into her solo career and made history in November 2022 by becoming the first trans woman to win a Latin Grammy, taking home Best MPB Album for Indigo Borboleta Anil. The record blends Portuguese and English lyrics with MPB, jazz, reggae, soul and samba. Openly trans, she uses her platform to push back against violence targeting queer people in Brazil, though she has been equally clear that she wants her music to get at least as much attention as her identity.
