Few British soul singers have managed to bridge the gap between dancefloor bangers and heartfelt balladry quite like Lisa Stansfield. Her collaboration with Coldcut on "People Hold On" in 1989 opened the floodgates, and her debut solo album Affection followed later that same year, fuelled by the worldwide number one "All Around the World". That album alone has shifted five million copies, and she has sold over 20 million albums in total across a career spanning decades. Along the way she picked up three Brit Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, and a Grammy nomination, with Billboard ranking her the 46th most successful dance artist of all time as recently as 2016. Stansfield has never been content to stay in one lane. She carved out a parallel acting career, appearing in films like Swing, for which she also recorded the soundtrack, and later The Edge of Love and Northern Soul. Musically she kept pushing forward too, releasing Seven in 2014 and then Deeper in 2018, the latter spawning the single "Everything" which hit number one in the UK soul chart. Her collaborators throughout her solo work have consistently included songwriting partners Ian Devaney and Andy Morris, the same team she first worked with back in the Blue Zone days.
