Four Top 20 UK albums in five years is a decent run for any band, and Lloyd Cole and the Commotions pulled it off with a sharp, literate style that still sounds distinctive. Formed in Glasgow in 1982 and signed to Polydor, the band's debut album Rattlesnakes came out in 1984, peaked at No. 13 in the UK, went gold, and landed on NME's Top 100 Albums of All Time list. Tori Amos later covered the title track, and the Manic Street Preachers counted it among their favourites. The follow up Easy Pieces hit No. 5 on its first week, with 'Brand New Friend' and 'Lost Weekend' giving the band their only UK Top 20 singles. Third album Mainstream kept the gold certifications coming before the band split in 1989. They reunited briefly in 2004 for a handful of shows to mark the 20th anniversary of Rattlesnakes, playing to packed houses at Glasgow's Barrowlands and dates in Dublin, Manchester and London.
