Lord Finesse is one of the key architects of East Coast boom bap, and his fingerprints are all over some of the most celebrated records to come out of New York in the 1990s. As the driving force behind the Diggin In The Crates crew, he helped shape a whole generation of underground hip hop alongside Diamond D, Big L, Fat Joe and O.C. His production credits alone tell the story: he helmed tracks on The Notorious B.I.G.'s debut Ready to Die, produced a big chunk of Big L's Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous, and contributed to Dr. Dre's landmark 2001 album. His own mic work is equally sharp. The 1996 album The Awakening, which he produced entirely himself, pulled in an impressive roster including KRS One, MC Lyte and Grand Puba. Beyond hip hop circles, millions of people have heard his voice without knowing it: his phrase "right about now, the funk soul brother" became the spine of Fatboy Slim's global smash "The Rockafeller Skank". In 2020 he dropped Motown State Of Mind, proving he has no interest in coasting on legacy.
