About
Lorenzo Viotti has built one of the more quietly impressive conducting careers of his generation, moving between symphonic and operatic repertoire with equal ease. The Swiss conductor came up through a rigorous musical education that included studying percussion with the Vienna Philharmonic, and he carries that orchestral player instinct into the pit and onto the podium. Competition wins at Cadaqués, the MDR Sinfonieorchester, and the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Awards put him on the map early, and the International Opera Awards named him Newcomer of the Year in 2017. His tenure as chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and Dutch National Opera all at once was a rare triple appointment. He stepped down from those posts at the close of the 2024 to 2025 season, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, where he made his professional debut back in 2014, has since appointed him music director from the 2026 to 2027 season onward. On top of that, Zürich Opera announced him as their next Generalmusikdirektor from 2028.
