Pitchfork once called Los Campesinos! "the 21st century's most endearing cult band", which feels about right. The seven piece from Cardiff built their reputation on chaotic, glockenspiel laden indie pop that owes a debt to the twee pop movement, and they have been at it since forming at Cardiff University in 2006. Their debut, Hold on Now, Youngster..., landed in early 2008 to enthusiastic reviews, with Pitchfork describing it as a "giddy, tuneful love note to individuality, pathos and everything else indie pop built its name on". They followed that up with a second record, We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, just months later, then kept pushing with Romance Is Boring in 2010, a record that stretched their already busy sound even further. Since then the band has put out a string of albums, and their most recent, All Hell from 2024, is both their latest and their highest charting release to date. In 2021, Pitchfork also included them in a list of the 200 most important artists from the site's first 25 years, cementing their place as genuine indie cult royalty.
