About
Louis Davids made his name as the sharpest, warmest comedian the Netherlands ever produced, blending songs, sketches and ventriloquism into a style that was entirely his own. His signature piece, De Kleine Man, which he first performed in 1929, cast him as a bowler hatted everyman railing against the absurdities of modern life and politics, and the song followed him for the rest of his career, earning him the nickname 'de grote kleine man'. His Kurhaus period in Scheveningen through the 1930s was where his fame peaked, running shows that gave early breaks to artists like Wim Kan, Corry Vonk and Wim Sonneveld. Before all that, Davids spent years building his craft through duo work with his sisters Rika and later Henriëtte, touring Germany and England and helping create the first major Dutch revue, Koning 'Kziezoowat. His partnership with Margie Morris produced a string of celebrated songs, including material for Herman Bouber musicals like De Jantjes. A collaboration with lyricist Jacques van Tol then gave him much of the material that defined his Kurhaus years.
