About
Lower Dens built a reputation as one of Baltimore's most interesting guitar bands before gradually shifting toward something far more synth driven and spacious. Formed in 2010 around Jana Hunter, the group's sound evolved from the guitar heavy dream pop of their debut Twin Hand Movement, which earned an 8.1 from Pitchfork, to the krautrock tinged electronics of Nootropics, written largely on a laptop and a MIDI keyboard while on tour. Influences like Kraftwerk, Fripp and Eno, and Bowie's work on Iggy Pop's The Idiot shaped that shift considerably. Their fourth album The Competition arrived in 2019, and the videos for Young Republicans, I Drive, and Galapagos showed the band still pushing their sound in a poppier direction. In December 2021, Hunter announced the end of Lower Dens, citing an inability to keep participating in the music industry.
