About
Also known as: Lunasa
Named after Lughnasadh, an ancient Celtic harvest festival, Lúnasa have been one of the most compelling forces in traditional Irish instrumental music since forming in 1997. Built around fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes, guitar and double bass, the Irish group carved out a sound that sits at the sweet spot between deep tradition and forward momentum. Their 2002 album The Merry Sisters of Fate earned them wide recognition, and The Kinnitty Sessions, recorded live before an audience at Kinnitty Castle in County Offaly, was named best traditional album of 2005 by Irish Music Magazine. Over the years the lineup has shifted but the core has held, with founding members Seán Smyth and Trevor Hutchinson still in the band. Their 2018 album CAS brought in a remarkable roster of guest vocalists including Natalie Merchant, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Eric Bibb, pushing the instrumental group into unexpected and rewarding territory. A 2024 live album recorded in Kyoto shows they are still very much out in the world, playing.
