Named after a bumbling fictional poet from a classic Soviet satirical novel, Lyapis Trubetskoy built themselves into one of Belarus's biggest rock acts across the 2000s and into the 2010s. Their 2008 album Manifest was voted best album of the year by multiple outlets, and by 2009 they were headlining festivals alongside Ukrainian rock heavyweights. They were also among the bands that performed for Euromaidan protesters in Kyiv in December 2013, which says a lot about where their politics stood. Frontman Siarhei Mikhalok dissolved the band in 2014 after a farewell concert at the Valeriy Lobanovskyi Dynamo Stadium, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko in the crowd. The split produced two offshoots: Mikhalok's Brutto and the Pavel Bulatnikaw led Trubetskoy Minsk. The band resumed activity in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, releasing a new video for the song Harry in a Ukrainian translation by poet Serhiy Zhadan and organizing a charity concert in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
