About
Named after the spiral galaxy Messier 83, this French electronic act has been the vehicle of Anthony Gonzalez since co founder Nicolas Fromageau departed after their second album, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. Gonzalez writes, records, and sings almost everything himself, pulling in guest musicians as needed, and the project has grown into nine studio albums plus two soundtracks under Mute Records. The sound sits somewhere between dream pop, shoegaze, and cinematic synth driven electronics, and it broke wide open in 2011 with "Midnight City", the lead single from the Grammy nominated double album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. That record remains the high water mark for most fans, though M83 has always been restless, from the stripped back ambient detour of Digital Shades Vol. 1 to the unabashed 1980s nostalgia of Saturdays = Youth. The track "Lower Your Eyelids to Die with the Sun" also appeared in the trailer for the film A Monster Calls.
