About
Also known as: Ben Haggerty, Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, Professor Macklemore
Few rappers have pulled off what Macklemore did with "Thrift Shop" in 2012: a self released track that hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, the first to do that in over a decade. Working with producer Ryan Lewis, he followed it up with "Can't Hold Us", making the duo the first in chart history to have their first two singles both reach the top spot. Their debut album The Heist peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200, and they did it all while keeping full control of their music through a smart deal with Warner's distribution arm. The 56th Grammy Awards handed them four trophies in one night, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Album. After the duo wound down, Macklemore stepped back out on his own with Gemini in 2017, again landing at number 2 on the Billboard 200. His third solo album Ben arrived in 2023. Throughout his career he has kept a sharp focus on conscious hip hop, tackling substance abuse, consumerism and social issues with a directness that sets him apart from a lot of his contemporaries.
