About
Also known as: Crazy Mad Professor, N. Fraser, Neil Fraser, Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser, The Mad Professor
Mad Professor runs what became the largest black owned studio complex in the UK, and it all started with a four track setup in a living room in Thornton Heath. That studio, Ariwa Sounds, opened in 1979, and from there the Guyana born producer built a reputation as one of Britain's key dub minds. His Dub Me Crazy series ran to a dozen instalments, and John Peel played tracks from it on his show, which helped get the word out. He has worked with Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sly and Robbie, Jah Shaka, Horace Andy and Pato Banton, but he also strayed well outside reggae. In 1995 he reworked Massive Attack's Protection into an electronic dub album called No Protection, and he has remixed Sade, the Orb, The KLF, Depeche Mode and the Beastie Boys. Add the Black Liberation Dub albums and a long run of lovers rock productions, and you get a catalogue as big as his studio.
