Dub is more than a music genre. Born in the studios and dance halls of Kingston, Jamaica in the 1970s, it is a way of creating and listening to music in which bass, echo, reverb and space become instruments themselves. What started as an experimental evolution of reggae has grown into a worldwide influence on electronic music, sound system culture and countless underground scenes. This special programme explores dub’s past, present and future through a remarkable lineup of artists. Scientist revisits his iconic 1981 album Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, while dub pioneer Mad Professor live mixes the hypnotic polyrhythms of Uganda’s Nakibembe Embaire Group and joins forces with the First Lady of Dub, Sista Aisha. Greentea Peng, appearing as Greentea Selecta, moves between dub, reggae, soul, psychedelic grooves and adventurous electronic sounds. The lineup also features Jamaican dub poet and cultural activist Mutabaruka, alongside The Bug vs Ghost Dubs, bringing together Kevin Martin and Michael Fiedler for their spectral take on dub. Tash LC connects Afro diasporic sounds with Kuduro, Soca and contemporary club rhythms, while Utrecht favourite CARISTA dives deep into bass, space and sound system culture with a special dub focused set. Introspekt completes the journey with a futuristic approach that connects the foundations of dub with new directions in electronic music. Together, these artists show why dub remains one of modern music’s most influential and endlessly evolving ideas.
