About
Marc Albrecht has spent decades shaping major orchestral and operatic institutions across Europe. The German conductor, based in Amsterdam, served as chief conductor of the Dutch National Opera, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra from 2011 through the 2019 to 2020 season, a remarkably long run at the top of three organisations simultaneously. Before that, he led the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg from 2008 to 2011, and the Staatstheater Darmstadt for six years before that. His discography on the Pentatone label is substantial and spans a lot of ground, from Richard Strauss tone poems and Alban Berg orchestral lieder with Strasbourg, to Mahler symphonies and song cycles with the Netherlands Philharmonic. He has a clear affinity for the late Romantic and early modern repertoire. Now named chief conductor designate of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra for the 2025 to 2026 season, with his full tenure beginning in 2026 to 2027, he is moving into a fresh chapter without slowing down.
