About
Also known as: Cohn, Marc, Marc Cohen, Marc Craig Cohn, Mark Cohn
Few songs are as tied to a single track as Marc Cohn is to "Walking in Memphis", but there's a lot more going on with this Cleveland born singer songwriter. The song, which he calls "100 percent autobiographical" and describes as being about a spiritual awakening rather than just a place, came out of a 1985 trip to Memphis he made while chasing a recording contract in New York City. It hit the top 40 in 1991 and landed him a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1992. His music runs deep in American soul, rhythm and blues, and gospel, and his albums have brought in some serious collaborators over the years, from Bonnie Raitt and David Crosby on The Rainy Season to India.Arie and Aimee Mann on the covers collection Listening Booth: 1970. More recently he has been working with the Blind Boys of Alabama, co writing tracks for their Grammy winning album and releasing Work to Do with them in 2019. Live recordings from City Winery show he is still very much at it.
