About
Maria Bengtsson is a Swedish soprano whose career has taken her through some of Europe's most prestigious stages, from the Royal Opera House in London to the Opéra Bastille in Paris and the Bavarian State Opera. She built a strong reputation at the Komische Oper Berlin, where Kirill Petrenko brought her on board in 2002, and her portrayal of Konstanze in Calixto Bieito's provocative staging of Die Entführung aus dem Serail became one of her defining early roles. She is particularly associated with Mozart and Richard Strauss, covering major roles including Donna Anna, Fiordiligi, the Marschallin, and the title role in Arabella. That Arabella, first performed at Oper Frankfurt in 2017, drew praise from Viennese critics who described her voice as flexible, warm and rich in colour, with perfect diction and graceful acting. She also sang the soprano solo at the opening of the Elbphilharmonie in 2017, performing Mendelssohn's Lobgesang under Thomas Hengelbrock.
