About
Maria Gadú has a knack for making Brazilian MPB feel both timeless and immediately alive. The São Paulo born singer, songwriter and guitarist broke through with her self titled debut in 2009, released on the Som Livre sublabel Slap, and quickly caught the ears of heavy hitters like Caetano Veloso and Milton Nascimento while playing bars in Rio de Janeiro. Her cover of Jacques Brel's "Ne me quitte pas" landed her a spot on the soundtrack of the TV series Maysa: Quando Fala o Coração, which gave her early visibility beyond the live circuit. She has been nominated twice for a Latin Grammy, including a nod at the 16th Latin Grammy Awards for Best MPB Album for Guelã. Her single "Shimbalaiê" pulled off something unexpected, hitting number one in Italy and staying at the top of the FIMI chart for five straight weeks in the summer of 2011. She also shared a studio with Tony Bennett, singing "Blue Velvet" on his 2012 duets album Viva Duets.
