About
Maria Somerville makes the kind of dream pop that feels rooted in a specific place: the wild, windswept landscape of Connemara in County Galway. Her third album Luster, released through 4AD in 2025, pulls together shoegaze, post punk, and ambient music around the idea of returning home after years away studying sound engineering in Dublin. She wrote it in a house on the banks of Lough Corrib, and the record earned an 8.5 from Pitchfork along with a Best New Music nod. Her influences tell you a lot about her sound: Grouper, My Bloody Valentine, Sinéad O'Connor, and fellow Irish artists Katie Kim and Róisín Berkley are all in the mix. Beyond making records, she hosts The Early Bird Show on NTS Radio, weaving together Irish folk, ambient music, spoken word, and field recordings into something genuinely its own.
