Maria Sur grew up in Zaporizhia, Ukraine, but it was the chaos of the Russian invasion in 2022 that set her career in motion. She and her family fled to Sweden, where a chance connection with Swedish singer Sarah Dawn Finer led to a performance at a fundraising gala for Ukraine at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm. She sang Survivor by Destiny's Child that night, and it clearly made an impression: she signed with Warner Music Sweden shortly after. Since then, Sur has competed twice in Melodifestivalen, Sweden's beloved Eurovision selection contest. Her 2023 entry Never Give Up placed ninth, and she returned in 2024 with When I'm Gone, reaching the final and finishing seventh. She also toured Sweden as part of the Diggiloo tour. Her YouTube channel shows covers of artists like Billie Eilish and Whitney Houston, giving a sense of the vocal range she brings to her pop material.
