About

When Marie Elisabeth Hecker won the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris at the Concours de violoncelle Rostropovitch in 2005, she was one of the youngest competitors ever to take the top prize at what is considered the most prestigious cello competition in the world, held every four years in Paris. It was also the first time a cellist had walked away with three prizes in the competition's thirty year history. The German cellist is known for her passionate playing, often performing with her eyes closed. Hecker has shared stages with orchestras including the Gewandhausorchester, Orchestre de Paris, Mariinsky Orchestra and the Münchner Philharmoniker, working with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Valery Gergiev, Christian Thielemann and Kent Nagano. Chamber music is just as central to her work. She regularly performs and records with her husband, pianist Martin Helmchen, and the two have also teamed up with violinist Antje Weithaas as a trio, recording works by Schubert and Beethoven. Her first solo recording featured the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra under Edo de Waart.
