With over 10 million albums sold worldwide and a reputation that has Rolling Stone Brasil ranking her as the second greatest singer in Brazilian history, right behind Elis Regina, Marisa Monte is one of the most significant voices in MPB. Born in Rio de Janeiro, she built a sound that sits at the crossroads of modern MPB, traditional samba, and pop, working with collaborators like Carlinhos Brown, Arnaldo Antunes, and Nando Reis on the Brazilian side, and names like David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, and Philip Glass on the international front. She has always been fiercely protective of her work, making ownership of all her songs a condition of her EMI contract, and later founding her own label, Phonomotor. Her debut live album MM from 1989 was both a critical and commercial hit, and two of her albums appear on the list of the 100 best Brazilian albums of all time. More recently she teamed up with Seu Jorge on the track Pra Melhorar, and she has kept her ties to the Tribalistas project alive with live performances.
