About
Markus Stenz served as chief conductor of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest from 2012 until 2019, a tenure that left a strong mark on the ensemble. De Volkskrant described his farewell concert as a performance that kept the orchestral texture transparent even in the most densely scored passages, while NRC awarded it five stars. Since stepping down he has returned to conduct the orchestra on several occasions, drawn back by programmes that suit his strengths. One such programme pairs Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, in Ravel's celebrated orchestration, with Rachmaninoff's symphonic poem The Isle of the Dead. Mussorgsky wrote his piano suite after visiting a posthumous exhibition of paintings by his friend Viktor Hartmann, weaving together fantastical scenes and recurring promenade themes. Rachmaninoff took his cue from a series of canvases by Swiss symbolist Arnold Böcklin, building his music into a slow, ominous approach toward death that is as luminous as it is unsettling.
