About
Winning two major international prizes in the same year is no small feat, but the Marmen Quartet pulled it off in 2019, taking the Grand Prize at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and joint First Prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, where they also picked up the Haydn and Canadian Commission prizes. Founded in London in 2013, the quartet brings together violinists Johannes Marmen and Laia Valentin Braun, violist Bryony Gibson Cornish, and cellist Sinéad O'Halloran. Their touring footprint spans the UK and Europe, and even during the uncertainties of 2020 they kept performing live, with dates across Germany and at the historic Schloss Esterházy in Austria. Things really opened up again from mid 2021, including a debut at the BBC Proms at Cadogan Hall, a stage that means a lot in the world of chamber music.
