About
Also known as: Чо Сонджин, 조성진
Winning the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition made Seong Jin Cho the first South Korean to take that title, and it launched him into a schedule that now runs to over 100 concerts a year, booked three years in advance. He signed with Deutsche Grammophon in 2016 and has since released seven studio albums, covering repertoire from Chopin and Ravel to Mozart and Rachmaninoff. In 2021 he gave the world premiere of a newly discovered Mozart work, Allegro in D, and he served as Artist in Residence of the Berlin Philharmonic for the 2024 to 2025 season. Critics tend to home in on his precision and control. The Guardian described his passagework as "gleamingly precise" with a sound ranging from "staggering softness to luminous Steinway shine," while The New York Times called him "a pianist of extraordinary precision and shading." The London Symphony Orchestra selected him as Artist Portrait for their 2025 to 2026 season, a strong sign that the big concert halls keep wanting him back.
