About
Also known as: Martha Argerich and Friends, マルタ・アルゲリッチ
Few pianists command the stage quite like Martha Argerich. The Argentine concert pianist from Buenos Aires built her reputation on a fierce, passionate technique that critics have compared to Vladimir Horowitz, and her early recordings of Prokofiev's Toccata and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 are still considered unmatched. She shot to international attention by winning the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1965, and her playing is particularly celebrated in the works of Chopin, Ravel, Liszt, Prokofiev, and Schumann. Since the 1980s, Argerich has largely stepped back from solo recitals, describing the solo stage as a lonely place. She channels her energy into chamber music and concerto performances instead, and has collaborated closely with artists like Nelson Freire, Mischa Maisky, and Gidon Kremer. She runs her own annual festival in Lugano, uses it to champion younger pianists, and serves as president of the International Piano Academy Lake Como. The BBC Music Magazine ranked her among the top 21 pianists of all time.
