Winning the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1975 at just 18 years old set Krystian Zimerman on a path that made him one of the most respected pianists of his generation. He followed that with a Berlin Philharmonic debut, a mentorship from Arthur Rubinstein, and a recording catalogue on Deutsche Grammophon that covers an enormous range of the piano repertoire. He is particularly celebrated for his Romantic interpretations, from Chopin and Brahms to Rachmaninoff, but also championed contemporary music: Witold Lutoslawski wrote his Piano Concerto specifically for Zimerman, who recorded it twice. His recordings with Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein and Simon Rattle are among the most admired in the classical world, and in 1999 he founded the Polish Festival Orchestra so he could conduct and perform the Chopin piano concertos himself. Since 1996 he has taught at the Music Academy in Basel. He has not performed in the United States since a protest at a 2009 Los Angeles concert, when he objected to American missile defense policy in Poland.
