About
Marmoucha Orchestra sits at the crossroads of East and West, built around Arin Keshishi, an Iranian Armenian bassist, composer and the ensemble's artistic director. The orchestra weaves together strings, oud, percussion and melodic traditions from the SWANA region into a sound that treats geographic and cultural borders as irrelevant. Rather than blending genres as a stylistic exercise, the group uses that expansive palette to create genuinely immersive musical experiences. One of their productions, Carried by Thewind, brings flamenco into that world by placing Antonio Lizana, a jazz saxophonist and authentic flamenco singer from Cádiz, at the centre of the orchestra's arrangements. The result sets his voice and saxophone against strings and oud, giving flamenco an entirely different sonic context. The production also incorporates the Sufi Sama tradition through dancer Ahmad Joudeh, and was supported by the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and the Fonds Podiumkunsten.
