About

Also known as: Martin Frost, Martin Frst

Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst has a way of making the clarinet feel like the most exciting instrument in the room. He was the first clarinettist ever to win the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, joining a list that includes Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein and Miles Davis, and the only wind player appointed Artist in Residence with Amsterdam's Concertgebouworkest. Composers such as John Adams, Krzysztof Penderecki and Anna Clyne have written works specifically for him, and his performances of Anders Hillborg's "Peacock Tales", a piece mixing clarinet playing with mime and dance, have topped 300 outings worldwide. Fröst doesn't stay in one lane. Beyond solo work, he develops multimedia projects that blend music, choreography and light design, and since 2019 he has served as principal conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. His extensive discography ranges from Mozart and Brahms to Vivaldi and contemporary commissions, mostly on BIS Records before he moved to Sony Classical in 2014. The album "B.A.C.H.", recorded with friends, is due out on Sony Classical in October 2025.
