About
Nicola Benedetti is the kind of musician whose career has consistently outpaced expectation. The Scottish violinist first turned heads when she won BBC Young Musician of the Year at 16, performing Karol Szymanowski's First Violin Concerto with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Since 2012 she has played the 1717 Gariel Stradivarius, on loan from a London Symphony Orchestra board member, and she regularly performs in a trio alongside cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk. Beyond the concert platform, Benedetti has carved out a serious role in music education and arts leadership. She founded the Benedetti Foundation in 2019, a charity focused on music education, and in 2022 became the first woman to serve as director of the Edinburgh International Festival. Her recording of Marsalis: Violin Concerto; Fiddle Dance Suite earned her a Grammy for best classical instrumental solo, and a portrait of her by Calum Stevenson, winner of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2021, now hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
