Christian Tetzlaff made his name in 1988 when, at just 22, he performed Schoenberg's notoriously demanding Violin Concerto with both the Cleveland Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic to critical praise. That kind of programming tells you a lot about him: he is not a violinist who plays it safe. He deliberately avoids the lush, constant tone that many of his peers lean on, believing that saving the most beautiful sounds for moments that truly call for them makes those moments land harder. He plays a contemporary violin by Stefan Peter Greiner, which he has preferred since 2002 over a Stradivarius, and he manages chronic neurodermatitis in his left hand that can make pressing the strings genuinely painful. His recording catalogue ranges from Bach's solo sonatas and partitas to violin concertos by Ligeti and Stuart MacRae, and his Schumann violin sonatas with pianist Lars Vogt earned Gramophone's recording of the month in January 2014. He signed with label Ondine in 2011 and has since served as Artist in Residence with both the Dresden Philharmonic and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. His quartet, founded in 1994 with his sister Tanja on cello, also keeps him active in chamber music.
