About

Few violinists can claim they won the International Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition at twelve, swept every special prize including the Bach prize, and left music critic Edward Greenfield more impressed than any of the senior category competitors. That was Julia Fischer in 1995, and she kept going from there. A German classical violinist, violist, and pianist, she performs up to 60 concerts a year and has shared stages with conductors like Simon Rattle, Lorin Maazel, and Herbert Blomstedt, working with top orchestras across Europe, the US, Brazil, and Japan. Her Carnegie Hall debut in 2003 was a landmark moment: standing ovations for Brahms' Double Concerto with Maazel and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. That same year she tackled the Bartók violin concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic on two weeks' notice, having never played it before. She became Germany's youngest professor when appointed at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts in 2006, and later took over Ana Chumachenco's chair at the University of Music and Theatre Munich.
